To make matters worse, it's boring and exhausting to count "one two three four" all day long! So why not let your phone do the counting for you? A teacher or coach might be able to count time for you, but when they need to call instructions, they need to stop counting - this means their instructions must be in time as well. When you're practicing by yourself, counting time can be very difficult while you're concentrating on notes or steps. Music teachers, composers, dance coaches, choreographers, and cheerleaders all know: counting out loud is the way to go. But when it's critical for you or your students to know where you are in the bar, counting aloud is more effective - especially for complex meters and rhythms. Plenty of metronomes on the App Store can replace a traditional metronome, clicking and ticking away at the edge of your attention.
